Orders are flooding in for the Audi-engined sports car KTM has acquired a new facility to produce 1,000 cars a year. The initial plan was to farm out the building of the car, but KTM will build its extreme machine itself alongside 10,000 quad-bikes in its new production facility. In fact, KTM decides to build its own first car instead of contracting the job out. To do so it’s building an entirely new production facility near Graz, Austria.

The development of the X-Bow is a fascinating one, it starting as something of an out of hours project among KTM and Audi engineers. The resultant X-Bow was shown to the public at the Geneva show for interest more than anything else, but the project quickly gained momentum with the X-Bow appealing to sports car and trackday enthusiasts around the world. It’s a hardcore machine with no windows or doors. What it does promise to offer is a supremely agile and involving driving experience.

240bhp from an Audi-sourced TFSI engine might not sound too much in a world where power figures are rising rapidly, but the X-Bow uses it well - managing 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds. KTM is also planning on producing a 300bhp version in the future. That should be scarily quick.

The X-Bow’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or twin-clutch S tronic automatic transmission. Double wishbone suspension features all round, the front suspension using a racecar style pushrod arrangement. The chassis itself is constructed from carbon-fibre, the X-Bow tipping the scales at an extraordinary low 700kg.

When driving at speed that weight is increased by the X-Bow’s aerodynamics providing downforce. NEW:   PAINT IN THE WINTER or COOL WEATHER

As fall and winter weather approaches in most of the USA (and whenever or wherever else) the question arises:

Can I paint when it’s cold outside?

Of course, to paint a car properly you will need a spray gun, a compressor, the paint, some miscellaneous small tools, sandpaper, and a certain amount of patience. Do it in a car port, garage, paint booth, or even in your driveway- Decide what is best for you.

Here are the things to remember for cold weather…

1) Make sure the temperature where you are painting is at least 55 degrees.

If it is colder than that, the paint will not set quickly enough, and will have much more tendency to run and drip. Even though urethane paint is catalyzed and hardens from chemical interaction, and will dry in almost the coldest temperatures, the RATE at which it dries is affected by ambient temperature.  If it “dries” to slowly, it will run.

Although 55 degrees is on the cool side, and warmer temperatures will allow faster setting and drying, it is possible to successfully paint at this temperature.

If the OUTSIDE temperature is cooler than 55 degrees– keep reading….

2) Paint inside a paint booth, or inside a garage.

In such an environment you can easily control the temperature with heaters and heat lamps.

Be aware, PAINT IS FLAMMABLE— well DUH.

Don’t have a flame going where you are painting. DUH.

3) Outside, you can, as I did, paint inside a covered car port.

Hang up plastic sheeting, and warm the place up with halogen lamps, and monitor the temperature.

4) Avoid days of high humidity.

Moisture cures urethane paint, so any increased humidity in the air is NOT good. However– if you have heated the area you are painting in, and moisture is not coming in, you will be okay.
